Churchyard project consultation

St Mary’s East Molesey churchyard was closed to new burials by an Order made in 1861 with the only exception being further interments in family vaults.

With a growing church and a high proportion of these being young people, we have been looking at ways to creatively use the resources we have been given as a church. One of the options we have been looking at is to relocate some of the headstones along the boundary walls.

We are aware relocating headstones can be a sensitive topic and want to treat it as such.

This will enable the following:

  • Increase our ability to maintain the churchyard grounds without the risk of damaging graves or headstones

  • Create more open space for community activities, gardening, youth and children’s activities etc

  • Expand the space usable by young people at church on a Sunday

  • They will be more protected and we can create a more accessible display of the headstones for visitors and researchers interested in local history or genealogy

  • Over time, headstones can become unstable, as some have previously and already been removed to the walls. Unstable or leaning headstones pose a risk of failing and injuring visitors. Relocating them will prevent such hazards and improve visibility

  • Improve the visual appeal of the space and create a peaceful atmosphere for visitors

  • Ensuring the headstones remain on site and part of the church’s history whilst also opening up potential for future developments

There are approximately 111 headstones (including crypts and tablets) in the churchyard. 2 of the crypts are protected and not allowed to be moved. The others we would need to seek permission from the Diocese via the faculty system. There are a number of headstones which are already located against the boundary walls or which have already been laid down in their location. We would be looking at relocating as many of the headstones and box tombs in the area to the south of the church as possible, which is approximately 56.

Notice available here and on the church noticeboard. The consultation period will end on 20th November 2024. If you have any questions, or would like further information on the proposals, please contact Nate Kurz - nate.kurz@smem.org.uk
